Sequoia Park Zoo

In operation since 1907, The Sequoia Park Zoo has long been considered one of the most important cultural facilities in the area. The Zoo is committed to providing a high quality facility that offers not only the care of a variety of animals, but also an opportunity for visitors to experience a greater appreciation of the value and diversity of our planet's life forms.

Highlights of Sequoia Park Zoo include the new Barnyard and Entry Pavilion plus a walk-through aviary. The Barnyard is a kid-friendly place to meet and greet several kinds of farm animals plus explore some of the secrets of our big, beautiful barn. Our walk-through aviary features a natural setting where you can enjoy close encounters with several species of colorful and unusual birds. The new Entry Pavilion includes a classroom, indoor animal exhibits featuring the Secrets of the Forest plus restroom, café and gift shop facilities. The Avenue of the Giants - a world-famous scenic drive, is by far the most outstanding display of giant trees in the California redwood belt.

Surrounded by Humboldt Redwoods State Park, which has the largest remaining stand of virgin redwoods in the world, this 31-mile portion of old Highway 101 runs parallel to Highway 101 and is accessible by most vehicles.

Picnic, camp, hike, swim, fish, raft or bike ride in the cool hush of the redwood forest. As the main artery into the heart of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the Avenue of the Giants provides access to numerous hiking trails and memorial groves. Stop at the posted trail heads and access roads--you won't be disappointed! There are also a number of spots from which you can access the Eel River for fishing, swimming and other water fun.

Just two miles south of Weott is the Humboldt Redwoods Visitor Center (707-946-2263), located on the Avenue, adjacent to Burlington campground. Here is a wonderful stop to stretch your legs, have a picnic and gather information about the area. There is a substantial natural history museum as well as the unique "Travel Log" display.

California's North Coast region offers some of the finest kayaking & rafting opportunities in the west.

The multitude of waterways, Humboldt Bay, Humboldt Wild Life Refuge, The Lagoons,rivers-Trinity River,estuaries & sloughs -Eel River Estuary,Mad River Slough,Hookton Slough and coastline, Trinidad Harbor, contain plenty of choices for the first time paddler or wilderness-paddling fanatic alike.

Bike Rides in Humboldt County

NORTH HUMBOLDT COUNTY

Ossagon Trail - Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
Ancient redwoods, Sitka spruce and ocean views are all a part of this ride. Begin at the Elk Prairie Visitor Center for this 19 mile loop through the redwoods and Sitka spruce out to the coast and back.

Lost Man Creek Trail -
This scenic hike and bike trail, located in Redwood National Park takes you through the redwood forest. Eleven miles combine with Bald Hills Rd and Hwy 101 for a 20 1/2 mile loop. The Trailhead begins at Lost Man Creek picnic area. It is is a moderate trail with some steep grades.

Hammond Trail McKinleyville
Perfect for bikers, walkers and equestrians, the Hammond Trail runs along the west side of Arcata to McKinleyville, taking in a variety of habitats and environments, with views, at times, overlooking the ocean. It is paved for most of its length and mostly level except for one tall hill just north of the bridge. Several access points.

Arcata Community Forest
The 790-acre Arcata Community Forest is crisscrossed by bike trails that follow old fire roads and logging skid roads. Very hilly and steep in places, the forest serves up a variety of challenging mountain bike rides for all skill levels. Map in side-bar

SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT COUNTY

Bike Trails in Humboldt Redwoods State Park
Mountain bikers -- If you're looking for a real challenge Humboldt Redwoods has plenty! All trails are designated as Multi Use Trails (M.U.T.) and all roads are open to mountain bikes, making for well over 75 miles of riding. Creative mountain bikers can pack their camping gear and stay at any of the five trail camps in the park.   (no bikes on hiking trails)

Road bikes -- The Avenue of the Giants and the Mattole Road offer level riding over paved surfaces and wind through the magnificent forest. These roads are heavily traveled by vehicles in the busy summer months and in many places. In the Rockefeller Forest, there is little or no road shoulder.

KING RANGE - LOST COAST

The BLM has been working with mountain biking advocates and clubs in constructing environmentally sustainable and challenging mountain bike trail system in the Paradise Ridge area of the King Range National Conservation Area, north of Shelter Cove Road. When completed, it will include 30 miles of trails encompassing varying levels of difficulty and diverse scenic vistas, terrain features and riding experiences.

The Paradise Royale Mountain Bike Trail was officially opened on September 27, 2008. All 14 miles are open and ready to ride!    Refer to the map.
